By mdixler at 3:13 pm on Monday, July 21, 2008

We have several important announcements this week! First we launch an exciting new program through our TorahMedia.com audio library. We will feature popular speakers weekly who will be teaming with us to offer their recordings, tapes and/or CDs for purchase at a discounted rate. This week, for example, we begin by featuring Rabbi Paysach Krohn — and over 100 of his recordings are on sale for just $2 each! This sale will end on Monday, so come visit before it’s too late.

Also available this week is Torah.org’s new advanced class Shabbos: Taam Hachaim. The author, Rabbi Binyomin Adler, is an experienced teacher and published author, so we look forward with high expectations! You can subscribe by visiting our Advanced Subscription Page, or by sending a blank email to shabbos-subscribe@torah.org. Enjoy!

And, finally, a warm welcome back to Rabbi Pinchas Winston, who is restarting his Perceptions on the Parsha class. Rabbi Winston wrote classes for us for over ten years before taking an eight-month “Sabbatical,” and now he’s back! You can subscribe to this class by visiting the Subscription Center or by sending a blank email to perceptions-subscribe@torah.org.

Please take advantage of these exciting opportunities!

Mourning the Destruction of the Temples and Exile

By admin at 3:49 pm on Tuesday, July 15, 2008

During this month, on the seventeenth day of Tammuz, we begin the period of mourning for the destruction of the Temples and the Jewish exile. In the Ashkenazic world, there are no weddings until after Tisha B’Av and enjoyable occasions and trips are minimized. The Sephardim begin their period of commemoration mourning on Rosh Chodesh Av or on the week in which Tisha B’Av itself falls. This period of time does allow us to assess what we do have and the progress that we and civilization have made over the past nineteen hundred and thirty eight years since the Romans destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem. Please see this article for more information about this important time.

Good Shabbos!

Torahmedia Featured Speaker: Rabbi Paysach Krohn

By admin at 3:22 pm on Tuesday, July 8, 2008

Rabbi KrohnAs a writer and speaker, Rabbi Paysach Krohn specializes in finding unusual treasures. In his travels around the globe, he visits Jewish communities, meeting Jews of every walk of life, and gathers their personal stories of unusual occurrences, “coincidences,” and moments of inspiration that affected their lives. Gathering these precious insights, he weaves them into a colorful tapestry, interlaced with Torah wisdom and human warmth. In the tradition of a true maggid, he presents them to audiences who flock to his entertaining and uplifting lectures. Rabbi Krohn has authored the Artscroll publishers classic 6-volume Maggid series (from where much of this biography is borrowed). Also, as a certified mohel in the New York Area he has authored the anthology Bris Milah about the laws and customs of Circumcision.
